The top ten included movies from every decade, from the 1930s to the 1990s, with the exception of the 1980s.
More than half of the films (56) were made between 1950 and 1979, thereby ignoring cinema's early years and some of the modern era.
The Godfather, Part II (1974) (at #32) was the only sequel represented on the list, although it could be argued that The Silence of the Lambs (1991) (at #65) was a sequel to Manhunter (1986).

This part of the movie actually employs some inventive camera angles and movements as well as imaginative lighting, and features a genuinely startling jump cut when the woman's scream is replaced by the feedback from a showband's amplifier in the local pub.
Of course when The Strange World of Planet X appeared at the end of the 1950s, the scenes featuring the oversized life-forms would have been more powerful, especially for those with phobias about insects, and it is important to be sympathetic to the technical standards from that period.

This tale, set in the 1950s, about the eponymous London charwoman who performs abortions in her spare time, is his most powerful since ''Naked." It's a deftly constructed tour de force of social reconstruction: You can feel the morality of the period breathing down every character's neck.

Big Night -- Two Italian immigrants in the 1950s -- a perfectionist chef (Tony Shalhoub) and his more pragmatic brother (Stanley Tucci) -- risk bankrupcy by putting on a lavish banquet for celebrity Louis Prima in hopes the resulting publicity will attract business to their restaurant.
As co-directed by Tucci and Campbell Scott, the bittersweet story is a warmhearted celebration of family, community and the fragile relationships that give life its flavor.
Directed by Charles Matthau, the result is a lovely little movie re-creating the charms of a past era without sentimentalizing its account of the boy's encounters with the adult world and odd behavior of his quirky elders (including retired judge Walter Matthau, swindler Jack Lemmon, servant Nell Carter and barber Roddy McDowall).

 Movies into Film
If dumb American movie critics—who expect a film to be one thing and only thing only, not to mix too many disparate or contrasting ingredients together—have had such consternation over the blending of light and dark in a film as harmless as Lemony Snicket, I doubt that they would rally behind Vuillet’s maverick debut.
I wept during the dog-walking montage that quickly chases Weber’s bizarre pronouncement, a montage scored to Blossom Dearie’s 1950s Verve recording of “Manhattan.” And the woman seated to my left, with whom I’d been trading sarcastic ripostes before the lights went down, noticed that I was sobbing.
