In the course of the movie the Romulan Senate is wiped out by a deadly blue powder and the sister planet of Remus stages an uprising, or something, against being made to work as slaves in the mines.
And then, in a dazzling display of time-honored movie developments, writer Wade and director Wayne Wang arrange for Marisa to be trying on one of Caroline's expensive dresses just as her son meets Marshall and talks them all into walking the senatorial dog in Central Park.
The first half of the movie is just about perfect, of its kind, and I found myself laughing more than I expected to, and even grinning at a colleague who was one seat over, because we were both appreciating how much better the movie was than it had to be.

Movies in the 1970s came in a wide variety, as the socially-conscious young directors that emerged in the late '60s grew in different directions, influenced by music, literature, and the nature of crime and war.
Another trend was the birth of the big-budget horror film, initiated by William Friedkin's The Exorcist which spawned numerous imitators.
A pivotal moment in movies was the 1975 release of Steven Spielberg's first major hit, Jaws, widely regarded as the birth of the blockbuster motion picture (a trend sealed two years later with the release of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Review | Disaster Movies: The Cinema of Catastrophe by Stephen Keane
I was particularly eager to read this volume on disaster movies because, although the genre has long been a popular one, it is not written about as much as, say, noir or horror.
Instead of supplying readers with a chronological list of selected disaster movies, the filmography lists -- in alphabetical order (thus ensuring that glancing at the list cannot convey a historical panorama) -- every film mentioned in the text, whether or not they can be counted as part of the genre.
In the case of Independence Day and Godzilla, however, he utterly fails to argue that they are disaster movies and readers are left with the impression that they were included simply because the author wanted to discuss them and not because they had anything to do with the book's subject.

 US-Movies worth seeing
In Germany (and probably in most european countries), you can watch movies from all around the world every day on TV, and as soon as foreign directors like Claude Chabrol, Aki Kaurismäki or Martin Scorsese produce a new film, you can be sure to find it in the programs of the movie theaters.
When you check american TV schedules or movie theater programs on the other hand you could easily get the idea that most people in the U. are not aware that there are other places in the world - apart from Hollywood - where films are produced.

However, the main two players in the movie, the football star and his rival, are obviously both actors, and to the educated eye, they are made to look "good" by top players either hitting or lobbing the ball right to them, or (in many cases) feeding multiball.

Review of Disaster Movies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Disaster movies have endured a common dismissal by film critics and historians as “formulaic and spectatorial” with “ingenious moments of destruction invariably wasted on cardboard characters” (1).
Keane argues that disaster movies are more than “spectacular scenes of death and destruction” because these films often critique such complex topics as technological advances and economic class distinctions as well as the disastrous hubris of humanity.
But on a more serious note, according to Keane, disaster movies have often carried a strong moral lesson of survival: “Disaster movies are thus not so much about clinging onto dear life as making your way, out of the rubble, toward a life with renewed perspective” (26).
