The following are the results of the 2003 California recall election held on October 7, 2003 which unseated Gray Davis and propelled actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the governorship.
The voters of California decided to recall governor Gray Davis by a 5 to 4 margin (55.4% in favor of recall vs. 44.6% against recall).
Following the election, all 58 of California's counties had 28 days (until November 4, 2003) each to conduct a countywide canvass of their votes.

The 2003 California recall was a special (A vote to select the winner of a position or political office) election permitted under (A state in the western United States on the Pacific; the 3rd largest state; known for earthquakes) California law.
California's Constitution requires that a recall election be held within 80 days of the date the recall petition is certified, or within 180 days if a regularly scheduled statewide election comes within that time.
A California citizen needed only to gather 65 signatures from their own party and pay a nonrefundable $3,500 fee to become a candidate, or "in lieu" of the fee collect up to 10,000 signatures from any party, the fee being prorated by the fraction of 10,000 valid signatures the candidate filed.

The 2003 recall movement against Governor Gray Davis was spearheaded by the People's Advocate, the anti-tax group founded by Paul Gann, and now headed by his associate, Ted Costa, and by a group of Republican Party activists including Shawn Steel, outgoing state Republican Party Chairman, and Sal Russo, a leading GOP strategist.

After several weeks in late August and early September with not much action in the California Recall, the last ten days (the election was off then back on, followed by last night's debate) has taken the race directly into the stretch run.
As much as Davis and many on the Democrats' side want to play up the recall as a partisan power grab by the GOP, they are wrong to underestimate the genuine level of disgust and frustration with the management of the states' affairs in Sacramento by people all across the political spectrum, not just Republicans.

These candidates paid $3,500.00 (or got equivalent signatures) to be on the ballot and paid $10 per word to give you their point of view in the voter's pamphlet.

While, I would like to support a more conservative candidate, as of today, my vote will go for Arnold, because I believe that he has the best chance of winning.
In concentrating all the blame on Davis (who certainly deserved what he got), it has effectively let them off the hook for the mess we're in, despite their active collusion.
What all this means, IMO, is that in addition to focusing on the ~15% undecideds, whoever becomes the Republican candidate must be able to get out the vote among a million or so of the ~5 million registered Republicans who did not vote last year.
