regular polytope - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
By the end of the 19th century, mathematicians had begun to consider regular polytopes in four and higher dimensions, such as the tesseract and the 24-cell.
It was not until the 19th century that a Swiss mathematician, Ludwig Schlfli, examined and characterised the regular polytopes in higher dimensions.
In the 17th century, Johannes Kepler studied data on planetary motion compiled by Tycho Brahe and for a decade tried to establish the pythagorean ideal by finding a match between the sizes of the polyhedra and the sizes of the planets' orbits.

History of music - Music Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Early music is a general term used to describe music in the European classical tradition from after the fall of the Roman Empire, in 476 CE, until the end of the Baroque era in the middle of the 18th century.
The style of the Burgundian composers, as the first generation of the Franco-Flemish school is known, was at first a reaction against the excessive complexity and mannered style of the late 14th century ars subtilior, and contained clear, singable melody and balanced polyphony in all voices.
By the middle of the 15th century, composers and singers from the Low Countries and adjacent areas began to overspread Europe, moving especially into Italy where they were employed by the papal chapel and the aristocratic patrons of the arts, such as the Medici, the Este family in Ferrara, and the Sforza family in Milan.

Many contemporary composers working the early 21st century were prominent figures in the 20th century, including György Ligeti, Mauricio Kagel, Harrison Birtwistle, Elliot Carter, Steve Reich, Phillip Glass, John Adams and Henri Dutilleux and many younger figures such as Oliver Knussen and Thomas Adès.
The lesson of obscure composers in the past becoming important later applies doubly so to contemporary music, where it is likely that there are "firsts" before the officially list first, and works which will be later admired as exemplars of style, which are as yet, unheralded in their own time.
Modernism is also present as surface or trope in works of a large range of composers, as atonality has lost much of its ability to terrorize listeners, and even film scores use sections of music clearly rooted in modernist musical language.

 NewMusicbox Another Century List
For people unattuned to classical music, suggesting that only a quarter of the music should be of the here and now and that a full quarter should be by faraway dead folks seems far-fetched.
Since the list was suggestive--not prescriptive--and the idea was to give as many choices as possible, I thought it might be fun to compile Another Century List, using the same rules as before with a few new ones thrown in.
Based on discussions people were having at the most recent Chamber Music America conference, I've even compiled a Third Century List for works outside the domain of what is conventionally perceived to be classical music in the hopes that blurring these perceptions allows for greater musical understanding.

There is a general dislike and lack of belief in 20th-century classical composers.
If we feed them only tonal 18th- and 19th-century music as the classical music of the 20th and 21st century, then it is a relic and cannot attract those who respond to vibrant, modern pop music.
Classical music can't compete by offering Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, etc. If we don't want to hear contemporary composers, then we are stultifying the music.

Conrad's musical offerings proved unexpectedly popular and his operations continued until his employer, the Westinghouse Electric Company, realized the potential of this new medium and applied for an official broadcasting license in 1920, granted on October 27.
The KDKA callsign was assigned sequentially from a list maintained for the use of US-registry maritime stations, and on November 2, 1920, KDKA broadcast the US presidential election returns from a Westinghouse building in East Pittsburgh.
There is some indication that the new license had not been received by that date, and the station may have gone online with the experimental call sign of 8ZZ that night.
