The earliest television sets were radios with the addition of a television device consisting of a neon tube with a mechanically spinning disk (the Nipkow disk, invented by Paul Gottlieb Nipkow) that produced a red postage-stamp size image.
Television in its original and still most popular form involves sending images and sound over radio waves in the VHF and UHF bands, which are received by a receiver (a television set).
Paralleling television's growing primacy in family life and society, an increasingly vocal chorus of legislators, scientists and parents is raising objections to the uncritical acceptance of the medium.

Television manufacturers supply the hardware to the 98 million households that represent 98% of the United States population that own a television set (Nielsen Media Research, 1997.) Without the manufacture of this equipment, ABC would not be able to reach it’s viewing public.

The network was established as a direct result of changes in the television regulatory environment that year that allowed television networks to produce and syndicate more of their own programming.

A number of ABC affiliates have scrapped tonight's Veterans Day broadcast of Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning film Saving Private Ryan out of concern that the unedited movie could leave them open to fines by the Federal Communications Commission.
Affiliates are forbidden from bleeping or editing out epithets from Saving Private Ryan because of a clause in Spielberg's contract that calls for the film to be shown unexpurgated.
ABC cited a letter from the FCC in 2002 that defended the broadcast of Ryan over objections from the conservative-leaning American Family Association, which complained about the 2001 broadcast.
