  Britain.tv Wikipedia - Athlon
The original Athlon, or Athlon Classic, was the first seventh-generation x86 processor and, in a first, retained the initial performance lead it had over Intel's competing processors for a significant period of time.
AMD kept the 64-bit L2 cache data bus from the older Athlons as a result, and allowed it to have a higher latency than Intel was using in their inclusively cached processors.
However, AMD did not try to do so; their focus was now on the soon-to-be released K8, the Athlon 64.

Welcome to AnandTech.com [ Article: AMD Athlon 64 & Athlon 64 FX - It's Judgment Day]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
AMD originally announced that the Athlon 64 would have a 512KB L2 cache, however after continued delays and increased competition the Athlon 64 was given a full 1MB L2 cache.
AMD's justification for no unbuffered support is that the Athlon 64 FX is for the "enthusiast" community and these "enthusiasts" will want to use lots of memory of densities that are currently only available in registered module sizes.
AMD has no favorites in the chipset game; although they shipped all initial review systems with nForce3 boards, their reasoning was primarily one of availability, as they had to ship systems out in the summer to meet the deadlines faced by print publications.

 Testing 12 Athlon 64s (page 1: Athlon 64) - BeHardware
Released in September, 2003, the Athlon 64 processors are based on AMD’s K8 architecture.
Initially all AMD processors were equipped with 1024 kb of cache L2 in addition to 128 Ko of cache L1.
AMD, however, rapidly changed this configuration, and later they were equipped with 512 KB of cache L2, but with an increased frequency.

AMD later produced the 80286, or 286, under the same arrangement, but then Intel cancelled the agreement in 1986, and refused to hand over technical details of the i386 part.
AMD also adopted a PR rating for their processors, which would supposedly project the clock rate relative performance of these new Athlons versus the earliest versions of the Athlon.

Athlon XP In performance terms, the Thunderbird had easily eclipsed the rival Pentium III, and the early Pentium 4s were a long way off the pace, but gradually clawed their way closer.
Because the Athlon XP had much higher IPC (instructions per clock) than the Pentium 4 (and about 10% higher than a Thunderbird), it was more efficient; it delivered the same level of performance at a lower clock-speed, or higher performance at the same speed.
AMD did have initial troubles with the "Thoroughbred A" revision having substantial heat issues, which were solved in the "B" revision.

 Howstuffworks "How Microprocessors Work"
The microprocessor is the heart of any normal computer, whether it is a desktop machine, a server or a laptop.
The microprocessor you are using might be a Pentium, a K6, a PowerPC, a Sparc or any of the many other brands and types of microprocessors, but they all do approximately the same thing in approximately the same way.
The first microprocessor to make a real splash in the market was the Intel 8088, introduced in 1979 and incorporated into the IBM PC (which first appeared around 1982).

AMD is just starting the mass production of the Athlon 64 mobile processors manufactured with 90nm technology, and since September 15, 2004 we see the desktop Athlon 64 processors based on the new 90nm cores.
Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the first Athlon 64 processors to use the new Winchester core appeared CPUs for Socket939 platform.

 Welcome to AnandTech.com [ Article: AMD Athlon 64 4000+ & FX-55: A Thorough Investigation]
Recently AMD made the transition to 90nm with their Athlon 64, but did so on lower clocked parts, much like what Intel used to do whenever they would introduce a new manufacturing process.
The first 90nm Athlon 64s came in the flavor of 3000+, 3200+ and 3500+ chips on the desktop, and despite initial overclocking success, 2.2GHz was the highest clock speed AMD introduced at 90nm.
The Athlon 64 4000+ averaged 3.9% faster than the 3800+ in two out of the three 3dsmax rendering tests, somewhat justifying its rating considering that the one test it did not show an improvement in was a geometric mean of four individual render times.

AMD allies with Transmeta - May 25, 2001
Specifically, Transmeta has licensed AMD's "x86-64" microprocessor architecture and a complementary technology called "HyperTransport," which is used to improve the speed at which data can move between a system's microprocessor and peripheral chips.
"AMD is also taking a leadership role in a number of technology innovations in a way that has not been seen or acknowledged in the past," Weber added.
As for the HyperTransport technology — which AMD claims enables the chips inside of PCs, as well as in networking and communications devices, to share data up to 24 times faster than existing technology allows — Ditzel said there were very few choices out there.

Athlon is the name of a family of CPUs designed by AMD, targeted mostly at the desktop market.
Athlons use a double data rate (DDR) front side bus, (EV-6) meaning that the actual data transfer rate of the bus is twice its physical clock rate.
The FSB's true data rate, 200 or 266 MT/s, is used in the tables, and the physical clock rates are 100 and 133 MHz, respectively.
