During this time, AMD attempted to embrace the perceived shift towards RISC with their own AMD 29K processor (based on a bitslice computational model), and they attempted to diversify into graphics and audio devices as well as flash memory.
AMD also release a second line of processors based on the Athlon core called the Duron which was a slower and cheaper version of the processor aimed at competing against the still-shipping Celeron processor, providing some insulation for the Athlon against AMD's prior reputation for only making cheaper and slower "Intel clones".
AMD later introduced the "Barton" core, which increased the L2 cache to 512 KiB.

 CPU socket at AllExperts
The term CPU socket (or CPU slot) is widely used to describe the connector linking the motherboard to the CPU(s) in certain types of desktop and server computers, particularly those compatible with the Intel x86 architecture.
Most CPU sockets and processors in use today are built around the pin grid array (PGA) architecture, in which the pins on the underside of the processor are inserted into the socket, usually with (ZIF) to aid installation.
In contrast to this, a couple current and upcoming sockets use a land grid array (LGA) in which the pins are on the socket side instead and come in contact with pads on the processor.

AMD originally designed the Opteron to compete against Intel's IA-64 Itanium architecture, but the failure of the IA-64 project to leverage volume sales means that the Opteron now competes with Intel's Xeon processor.
AMD K8L is a major revision of the AMD64 microarchitecture and hardware platform, and is due late in 2006 or early in 2007.

Intel’s policy in the early 1990s of producing OverDrive CPUs that were actually designed for upgrade purposes required that the interface by which they were connected to the motherboard be standardized.
The CPU is connected to the motherboard via some form of CPU interface, either a slot or a socket.
It’s micro Pin Grid Array (µPGA) interface allows both the size of the CPU itself and the space occupied by the socket on the motherboard to be significantly reduced.

Processor sockets: The types of socket used by AMD and Intel processors
AMD used Socket 7 motherboards (with a 66MHz FSB) for its K6 processors, and Super Socket 7 motherboards (with a 100MHz FSB) for all of its K6-2, and K6-3 processors, but followed Intel when it decided to use a slot, which it called Slot A, for its first Athlon processors.
Socket AM3 is part of AMD's K8L processor architecture and is set to debut late in 2007 in a dual-core (X2) chip, the codename of which has yet to be released.
Having only one socket, removes the confusion associated with using several types of socket, and means that only one type of motherboard is required to run all of its latest processors.

Although the memory controller may be supplanted by an external chip as new memory technologies enter the market, one will then lose the benefits of an in-core controller (thus necessitating the release of new processors with updated memory controllers to match the speed of new memory technologies).
As of early 2005, most retail motherboards offer one or two CPU sockets (with Tyan as the sole vendor of 4-socket motherboards.) The Opteron CPU directly supports up to an 8-way configuration, which can be found in mid-level servers.
Since motherboard costs go up dramatically as the number of CPU sockets increases, multicore CPU's now allow much higher performing systems to be built with more affordable motherboards.

 Buyer's Guide to CPUs
The slot or socket on a motherboard is where the CPU plugs into it.
If the CPU is in packaging designed for a slot, you won't be able to plug it into a socket.* Though Intel and AMD have alternated between slots and sockets throughout the years, both companies are currently working with sockets.
AMD is using model numbers rather than clock speeds b/c they say an 1800+ (1.533GHz) is comparable to a 1.8GHz P4.

AMD also tested their products at their own expense, to very stringent Military Standards (MIL-STD-883).
AMD went public in 1972, and by the end of 1973, they had created their own Volume-production overseas base in Penang, Malaysia.

AMD merged with ATI on July 24, 2006, by reaching an agreement at a cost of $5.4 billion.
This was due to the fact that AMD as a company was in its infancy of microprocessor design, thus a lot of deadlines were missed and there was a lack of manufacturing expertise in scaling designs.
AMD's virtualization extension to the 64-bit x86 architecture is named AMD Virtualization (also known by the abbreviation AMD-V), and is sometimes referred to by the code name "Pacifica".

All CPU Sockets | Hardware Secrets
Since the very first CPU both Intel and AMD have been creating several different sockets and slots to be used by their processors.
The socket created to be used together with the very first 486 processor wasn’t ZIF and didn’t allow you to replace the CPU with a different processor model.
Other socket standards were released for the 486 family after socket 1 — socket 2, socket 3 and socket 6 — in order to increase the number of CPU models that could be installed on the CPU socket.

 AMD 29000
The AMD 29000, often simply 29k, was a popular family of RISC-based 32-bit microprocessors and microcontrollers from Advanced Micro Devices.
In late 1995 AMD dropped development of the 29k because the design team was transferred to support the PC side of the business.
The majority of AMD's resources were then concentrated on their high-performance, desktop x86 clones, using many of the ideas and individual parts of the latest 29k to produce the AMD K5.
