Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Species (via CobWeb/3.1 planet03.csc.ncsu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Species are "groups of actually or potentially interbreeding natural populations which are reproductively isolated from other such groups" (however, see other definitions of species below).
When an unknown species is being referred to this may be done by using the abbreviation "sp." in the singular or "spp." in the plural in the place of the second part of the scientific name.
Moreover, boundaries between species are often fuzzy: there are examples where members of one population can produce fertile offspring with a second population, and members of the second population can produce fertile offspring with members of a third population, but members of the first and third population cannot produces fertile offspring.

Several species of Nyssa are common to the two districts, as are a climbing palm, two vines, a magnolia, andc.
Among the characteristics of this Miocene flora are the large number of families represented, the marked increase in the deciduous-leaved plants, the gradual decrease in the number of palms and of tropical plants, and the replacement of these latter by Mediterranean or North American forms.
Palms, referred to i i species, are found, though they seem to have decreased in abundance; of them 7 are fan-palms, the others including Phoenicites—a form allied to the date—and a trailing palm, Calamopsis, allied to the canes and rattans.

The plants involved in such associations include swollen-thorn acacias in Mexico and Central America; Neotropical trees in the genera Cordia, Myrcia, Tachigali and Triplaris; African species of Acacia, Barteria and Vitex; a Malagasy species of Mimosa; and an Australian tree in the genus Cupaniopsis.
In the case of the interaction between Pseudomyrmex ants and swollen-thorn acacias, scale insects are absent from the domatia, but the ants receive nutritional rewards from extrafloral nectaries on the leaf petiole and from lipid-rich food bodies (Beltian bodies) produced at the leaf tips.
Identification keys are available for the Pseudomyrmex species inhabiting swollen-thorn acacias (Ward, 1993) and Triplaris and Tachigali plants (Ward, 1999b).
