Maples are trees of the genus Acer in the Order Sapindales, variously classified in a family of their own Aceraceae, or (together with the Hippocastanaceae) in Sapindaceae; genetic evidence points to the latter being the more accurate option.
The leaves in most species are palmately veined and lobed, with 3-9 veins each leading to a lobe, one of which is in the middle.
The Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is tapped for sap, which is then boiled to produce maple syrup or made into maple sugar or maple candy.

 Massachusetts List of Endangered
"Special concern" (SC) species are native species which have been documented by biological research or inventory to have suffered a decline that could threaten the species if allowed to continue unchecked, or which occur in such small numbers or with such restricted distribution or specialized habitat requirements that they could easily become threatened within Massachusetts.
The rules and regulations and precise definitions relative to the establishment of the Commonwealth's list of endangered, threatened, and special concern species are set forth in 321 CMR 10.00 et seq.
Organization of the List - The list is generally organized according to the relationship of the listed species as determined by the science of taxonomy, which groups and categorizes species that are similar on the basis of shared evolutionary descent.

 Bonsai Species Guides Introduction
There are a large number of different species of trees that can be used for the practice of bonsai; nearly all share the characteristic of being able to produce new buds on old wood allowing continual pruning and re-generation to take place.
Some species are commonly seen such as the Elms, Junipers and Pines, others such as Grapevines, Tamarix and Hederas may be a rare occurrence but have their own characteristics and as equally valid.
This list is also by no means comprehensive; there will be species missing that have fantastic potential that remain unused or unheard of.

Fifty-eight species were selected: care was taken in choosing representatives from various continents and various climatic regions, trees that were listed in the Appendices and some that were not listed, and covering various degrees and forms of utilisation.
The timber species selected for evaluation were chosen to illustrate a wide range of differing degrees of threat to wild populations and levels of international trade.
A list was prepared from the Database of all the globally threatened tree species assessed as threatened because of decline due to exploitation and for which the threat was annotated as felling (this list is included as Annex 3).

 Species: Elaeagnus angustifolia
Originally planted in shelterbelts, it is one of the hardiest species of trees introduced to the Great Plains and has persisted and spread in many areas, especially in the understory along rivers and streams [172,197].
Additionally, in the absence of flooding, regeneration of native trees is impeded and organic matter accumulates, thus increasing chances for future fires that may further alter the species composition and structure of southwestern riparian forests and promote the spread of fire-tolerant nonnative species [60,61].
Lists of species observed using Russian-olive native riparian and upland sites are provided by Knopf and Olson [103].

This work involved the investigation of the population structure of woody vines in a mature mixed mesophytic forest on the Western slope of a mesa dissected from the edge of the Cumberland Plateau, in Madison County AL.
An area of one hectare was surveyed for tree species, and the vines associated with them.
Not only were some species of trees more susceptable to vine infestation, but large trees were more likely to have vines on them than would be predicted from their size alone.

Invasive Plant Species Occurring in Massachusetts
These invasives, typically called non-native species (also called "exotics" or "alienweeds") often occur in huge patches - one species taking the place of a great variety of native plants - thus reducing the biodiversity of natural areas.
Encourage the planting of native species in municipal and town gardens, memorial sites, parks, traffic islands, etc. Ask your nursery to stock more native species; point out any plants for sale at your nursery that are known to be harmful invasives.
Remember, however, that some species which are not highlighted may eventually become major problems, and that others may not become widespread problems.
