aworks :: "new" american classical music: December 2005
Thompson mostly played solo which puts the focus on his acoustic guitar playing, extraordinary as it is. He can play a thrilling bass line with melody on top, he was a timbral delight, and the improvisation was better than I expected.
Of course, his voice doesn't have the sublime melancholy of his ex-wife Linda, the youthful zest of son Teddy (whom we saw with his mom at Great American Music Hall) or the beauty of his late bandmate Sandy Denny (of Fairport Convention).
Thompson was in general quite witty in his remarks including the old line about how "I suffered for my music; now it's your turn." Astonishingly, he quipped twice about Igor Stravinsky including a threat to lead the crowd in a sing-along of The Rite of Spring although he didn't think we could count it.
