North of the Sahara Desert lie 5 predominantly Muslim countries all bordering on the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
Moving from west to east are the three countries which form the Maghreb region, the Kingdom of Morocco which has laid claim to the state of Western Sahara (Sahrawi Republic), a former Spanish colony on its southern border, and the republics of Algeria, and Tunisia.
The remaining countries are Libya and finally Egypt occupying the north-east corner of Africa and having an extension across the Gulf of Suez into the Sinai Peninsula through which runs the Suez Canal physically cutting off the continent of Africa from the Middle East.

The country became a Republic in April 1970, with an Executive President as the Head of State, and the Parliament as the Legislative body.
Despite it's size, The Gambia is relatively densely populated, with a predominantly Muslim population of slightly over 1 million (1993 census figures), and growing at an annual rate of approximately 3%.
The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, an organ set up under the provisions of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights by the OAU in 1986, is also head quartered in The Gambia.

With a fifth of Sub-Sahara's population, the country was still a relatively small player in the Internet sector until mid '98 when it only had a few dialup email providers and a couple of full ISPs operating on very low bandwidth links.
Some countries, such as Tunisia and Ghana have launched sites to announce tenders, however outsided South Africa, except for some African newspapers, there are still generally few organisations that are using the Web to deliver significant quantities of information or to carry out transactions with its user-base.
Comparing this to all of the low-income countries, (which house 50 percent of the world's population and 10 percent of the telephone lines), the penetration of phone lines on the sub-continent is about 5 times worse than the 'average' low income country.
