Grants of up to $1,000 are given to U.S. or Canadian poets and fiction writers "whose work addresses women's concerns or speaks for peace and justice from a feminist perspective." The awards are given twice a year; the deadlines are June 30 and December 31.
Algerian poet and fiction writer Assia Djebar is the 14th recipient of the $40,000 Neustadt International Prize for Literature from the University of Oklahoma.
The winners were Henry Israeli of Somers, New York, for his translation of the Albanian poet Luljeta Lleshanaku, and Lia Purpura of Baltimore, Maryland, for her translation of the Polish poet Grzegorz Musial.
