The Continental Army was formed on June 14, 1775, before the establishment of the United States, to meet the demands of the American Revolutionary War.
The Army of the United States was re-established for the Korean War and Vietnam War and was demobilized upon the suspension of the draft.
The civilian executive is the Secretary of the Army who heads the United States Department of the Army, formerly called the Secretary of War who headed the United States Department of War or the War Office for short, at the founding of the Republic.

 U.S. Army Five-Star Generals
Congress enacted legislation authorizing the grade of General of the Army on July 25, 1866, and on that date the new grade was conferred on Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant.
William T. Sherman, Grant's successor as Commanding General of the Army, was appointed as General of the Army on March 4, 1869, and upon his retirement in February 1884 was placed on the retired list as General of the Army.
Congress revived the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by Public Law 45, approved September 3, 1919, to honor General John J. Pershing for his wartime service.

The terms "General of the Armies of the United States" and "General of the Army of the United States" are commissioned officer grades of the Army of the United States.
Prior to 14 December 1944 there were, since the formation of the United States, but four Generals of the Army or of the Armies of the United States (both phrases being held to mean the same thing): Generals Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and Pershing.
The grade of general was revived under the title of "General of the Army of the United States," by the act of 25 July 1866, and was conferred upon Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant; and was recognized and continued by Section 9 of the Act of 28 July 1866.

But the international legal consensus is that a de facto state of "armed conflict" triggers the laws of war, not a de jure state of "war." Armed conflict is defined in functional terms, unlike a state of war which is triggered by a formal state of belligerency between two states.

 John Joseph Pershing, General of the Armies
This occasioned some heartburning in Army circles, for Pershing was junior on the list of major generals, with Generals Leonard Wood, Bell, Thomas H. Barry, Hugh L. Scott and Tasker H. Bliss senior to him.
The two-sided maneuver, which later became Army doctrine, was modestly born in his unit at Fort Bayard, New Mexico, in 1886, when General Nelson Miles instituted "raiding games" wherein one cavalry troop took the part of the raiding Apaches and the others countered their efforts.
Though they began randomly in the National Army of 1917- 1918 (some men were overseas two weeks after induction), the methods and training programs that Pershing inaugurated early in 1917 were the beginnings of the masterfully refined mobilization training plan of 1941-1945 that produced the finest, most far-flung army the world had ever seen.

A late 19th century law on the organization of the Army authorized one general and specified that he would have the title "General of the Armies of the United States."
In 1776 Congress conferred upon General George Washington the title "Commander-in-Chief of the Armies of the United States" so as to uniquely identify him.
