  Black Knight (Arthurian legend) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Black Knight is the name of a variety of characters, as comes with naming anyone a knight of a common color.
First and foremost he is mentioned as a knight who tied his wife to a tree after hearing she had exchanged rings with Perceval.
This Black Knight was undoubtedly the source for the character of the same name in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The first listed, the "short" or "non-cyclic prose Lancelot," is a very interesting point in the development of the legend: Lancelot is not yet involved in the Grail quest (indeed, it is implied that it has already occurred by the time he comes to King Arthur's court).

The most extensive list of name was found in the Post-Vulgate romance of the Grail (78:49-51), which has 110 names out of the 150.
Lancelot was the son of King Ban of Banoic (or Benoic or Benwick) and Helen or Elaine.
Lancelot's name was first mentioned in Arthurian legend in the Erec and Enide, and appeared briefly when he was defeated in a tournament by the hero of the Cliges, both works of Chretien de Troyes.

Lancelot du Lac is a non-insular figure -- his name is clearly a foreign importation and he was unknown to the Gogynfeirdd, the references to him by Welsh poets of the 15th and later centuries owing their origin to a knowledge of the French Vulgate Cycle.
It is worth noting that early Arthurian tradition gave Arthur more than one son: in the early 9th-century Historia Brittonum Arthur is said to have slain his son Amr.
