The earliest television sets were radios with the addition of a television device consisting of a neon tube with a mechanically spinning disk (the Nipkow disk, invented by Paul Gottlieb Nipkow) that produced a red postage-stamp size image.

The latest announcement is that Wyclef Jean has an HBO deal "to produce and star in a comedy series loosely based on his life." Jean will cowrite the series with Seth Rosenfeld and Danny Hoch and will also create original music.
All of the previous rap related tv announcements that I can recall are for unscripted/reality tv programs from Damon Dash's Ultimate Hustler, that premiered last night, to Rev Run's Run's House, premiering October 13th, to Nelly's life of a rapper show, expected sometime next year.
