 Submachine gun Summary
A submachine gun is a firearm that combines the automatic fire of a machine gun with the ammunition of a pistol, and is usually between the two in weight and size.
After WW2, the submachine gun's popularity in the military continued but began a slow decline, primarily being replaced by assault rifles, which filled a niche between the SMG and the battle rifle.
NFA firearms can be legally owned only if state and local law permit it, all the proper paperwork is submitted and approved, and a one time tax of $200 is paid.

Italy and Germany did; Japan, no. Japan was the ONLY country of the former Axis which didn't respected the Geneva Convention as for the treatment of the Prisoners of War.

 Mauser Kar 98k
One of the reasons behind the Soviets keeping these rifles after World War 2 was that they needed the rifles to arm their soldiers in case another war occurred and the Soviet Union was invaded again.
Another reason was that the Soviets wanted to support various communist guerrilla forces and newly-established communist governments around the world during the early Cold War period with a supply of cheap, surplus, military firearms like the Mauser Kar-98k and the Mosin-Nagant series rifles and carbines.
The provision of firearms like the Mauser Kar-98k and the Mosin-Nagant was one way that Moscow could support these organisations and governments until they trusted them enough to provide modern infantry weapons like the SKS carbine and the AK-47 rifle.

The military of tiny Croatia in WW2, despite the lack of proper arms, despite fighting against a formidable anti-Fascist guerilla opponent (partisans) and a strong Serbian nationalist army (the Cetniks), and despite a meddling Italy, managed to field an army that fought hard, and to the bitter end.
This Wehrmacht (Heer) unit of Croatian volunteers was raised in July, 1941, for combat on the Eastern Front.
The survivors of the Regiment (approximately 1000 men), that were evacuated from Stalingrad via air, formed the core of a new Croatian volunteer unit of the Wehrmacht - the 369th “Vrazja” (Devil’s) Infantry Division.
