World War II saw the birth of the reliable semi-automaticrifle and, more importantly, that of the first real assault rifles.The Germans essentially created and pioneered the idea of an "assault rifle" or sturmgewehr, coining the name for the species in the process.

It was descended from the nearly identical MP38, the differences being cost-saving alterations, especially more stamped rather then machined parts and an improved safety feature.
Among the era's submachineguns, the design was about average and was neither the cheapest, most reliable or most powerful but was regarded as satisfactory overall.
