  Baptist
Baptists emphasize that the remembrance is symbolic of Christ's body and reject literal views of communion such as transubstantiation and consubstantiation held by other Christian groups based on their interpretation of John 6.
Baptists who were imprisoned or died for their beliefs have played an important role in the historical struggle for freedom of religion and separation of church and state in England, the United States, and other countries.
Baptist comes from the Greek word 'baptistès' (to submerge), and the Latin 'baptista', and is in direct connection to 'the baptiser', 'John the Baptist'.

 Editorial
Baptists have always revolted against coercion by state or church in the matter of beliefs.
But Baptists would sell their birthright very cheaply if, within the Baptist family itself, one group should muzzle another group to prevent a free expression of beliefs whenever the situation called for such expression.
But Baptists have always insisted upon their own right to declare their beliefs in a definite, formal way, and to protect themselves by refusing to support men in important places as teachers and preachers who do not agree with them.

Confessions of Faith in Baptist History
Baptist churches have often expressed their faith in confessions that were a part of their charter.
Baptists of all types have traditionally and rightly insisted on the principle that the state ought not to interfere with the religious convictions and practice of anyone, unless they be manifestly subversive of the public order.
Baptists were in strong protest against this idea and insisted that religious convictions and practice were an individual matter and should be decided by individual choice without pressure, let alone coercion on the part of the state.

 Spurgeon Baptist Association of Churches
They did not adopt a confession of faith until 1700 and it was the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith, which was “The Confession”, adopted by churches across the colonies as well as the first Baptist association beginning with the Philadelphia Association in 1707.
The Second London Baptist Confession was adopted when representatives of 107 congregations from England and Wales met in London from September third to the twelfth in 1689.
It was not until the early twentieth century that Baptists in the south turned from the 1689 Confession to a form of the New Hampshire Confession of 1833.

Baptists should be confident that when their name is heard, no ambiguities are left in defining what they stand for.
These teachings emerged as Baptist distinctives because individual Baptist churches have consistently and independently held to them, not because some group of Baptist leaders composed the list and then imposed the distinctives on local churches.
A Baptist church may fellowship with other churches around mutual interests and in an associational tie, but a Baptist church cannot be a "member" of any other body.

 Baptist History
Whereas Baptists have historically been non-creedal, the fundamentalist leadership of the SBC is forcing creedalism upon Southern Baptists through the forced implementation of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.
Whereas Baptists have historically held to the authority of Scripture and looked to Jesus and the Holy Spirit as the criterion for interpreting the Bible, the fundamentalist leadership claims that looking to Jesus and the Holy Spirit as the authority for faith is a liberal position.
A number of other states conventions, as well as Baptist associations, are witnessing a prolonged struggle over the issue of the BFandM 2000, with many denominational entities refusing the dictates of the SBC to accept the BFandM 2000 as their sole statement of belief.

Mohler quoted Mullins as writing, "Baptists have always insisted upon their own right to declare their beliefs in a definite formal way and to protect themselves by refusing to support men in important places as teachers and preachers who do not agree with them.
"We adopted the confession of faith as our constitution because it expresses generally our views of the truth of the inspired word, and esteem it most of all because it disclaims equality with the Bible and professes to derive all that is valuable from the Scriptures," he quoted the minutes as reading.
Confessions, he said, must be used if doctrinal accountability is to exist.

A Welch Succession of Primitive Baptists
Though the London Confession was sometimes retained, as in the case of the Separate and Particular Baptist union in the Virginia Association, generally, when a merger did occur, the doctrine of the London Confession was lost over a period of time.
Although these confessions agree on the fundamentals of Christian faith, there is a distinctive New Covenant emphasis concerning biblical law in the 1644 and 1646 editions of the First London Confession that is regretfully lacking in the Old Covenant emphasis of the Westminster and Second London Confessions.
Therefore, it may be concluded that the content of the 1655 Midland Confession satisfied the strict creed of faith and order to which the Olchon Church continuously held from her ancient origin to the establishment of fellowship with the brethren of Midland Association in 1658 and beyond.
