Baroque music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Baroque music describes an era and a set of styles of European classical music which were in widespread use between approximately 1600 to 1750 (see Dates of classical music eras for a discussion of the problems inherent in defining the beginning and end points).
Baroque music often strives for a greater level of emotional intensity than Renaissance music, and a Baroque piece often uniformly depicts a single particular emotion (exultation, grief, piety, and so forth; see doctrine of the affections).
Baroque music was more often written for virtuoso singers and instrumentalists, and is characteristically harder to perform than Renaissance music, although idiomatic instrumental writing was one of the most important innovations of the period.

Baroque Composers — Overview, individual biographies
Typical of baroque musicians active in Rome was the composer and violinist Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713), whose style of playing became the basis for the violin technique of the 18th and 19th centuries, and whose chamber music compositions were far-reaching in their influence.
Many eminent composers of the baroque period, notably Handel for example, sojourned in Rome, and Corelli's influence was to spread itself throughout Europe.
Thus German composers were attracted to the fugue, the canon and passacaglia for their basis of fundamental form, pattern and unity.

Frescobaldi composed a small amount of vocal music, but it was his compositions for the keyboard—which included a number of toccatas, canzonas, ricercars and capriccios—that influenced composers well into the 18th century—particularly J.
In addition to his keyboard music, Couperin composed a number of sacred vocal works that were heavily influenced by Italian cantatas and sonatas, and his interest in the juxtaposition of French and Italian styles continued throughout his lifetime.
He also composed a large amount of instrumental music; in an autobiographical article from 1740, Telemann estimated that he had written 600 suites, about a quarter of which are extant today.

I'm guessing that folks in the biological sciences would not have the difficulty distinguishing between homology (which points to the common evolutionary lineage of two entities) and analogy (which points to the common function of two entities) that we seem to be having here.
Analogies between the performance practices we've labeled "Baroque continuo" and "Jazz rhythm section" are so clear (and are mentioned in every music appreciation text I've ever glanced at, not to mention Leonard Bernstein's "The Joy of Music") as to need no further establishment.
The evolution of analogous pulse-keeping ensembles for dance music (and the need for the musicians who are being used as time-keepers and pulse-beaters to make the job, and the result, somewhat more interesting) in many different idioms and cultures should not raise an eyebrow.
