BeOS PE could be started from within Microsoft Windows or Linux, and was intended to nurture consumer interest in its product and give developers something with which they could tinker.
The plain BeOS R5 GUI is commonly cloned, either as the main UI, such as in TriangleOS, or as a theme, such as for GNOME.
BeOS was well respected by a small but loyal community, yet the BeOS user base was disappointed when Be Inc. failed commercially and no further enhancement of the operating system would be possible.

BeOS PE could be started from within Microsoft Windows or Linux, and was intended to nurture consumer interest in its product and give developers something they could tinker in.
Unfortunately, BeOS PE and BeIA proved to be too little too late, and in 2001 Be's intellectual property was sold to Palm, Inc. BeOS R5 is considered the last official version, but BeOS R6 (codename: Dano), which was under development before Be's sale to Palm, was leaked to the public shortly after the company's demise.
BeOS was well loved by many people, and the BeOS user base was disappointed when Be, Inc. failed commercially and no further enhancement of the operating system would be possible.

The API was written in POSIX compatibility and access to a command line interface through the Bash shell, although internally it is not a Unix-derived operating system.
Initially designed to run on AT&T Hobbit-based hardware, BeOS was later modified to run on PowerPC-based processors: first Be's own systems, later Apple's PReP and CHRP platforms, with the hope that Apple Computer would purchase or license BeOS as a replacement for its then aging Mac OS.
An easter egg in the OS allowed changing the titlebar look-and-feel to a few others, and in Dano, this had been extended to be a feature allowing changing of the title bar and scrollbars.

Web Development with BeOS (R5) -- Diamonds in the Rough --
In many ways, BeOS is what MacOS X should have been (not just metaphorically, Apple was actually in negotiations with Be, Inc. in 1998; but they fell through in the end).
In most respects, BeOS improves on its various cousins, but I would wish for a bit more keyboard-friendliness than its mouse-oriented interface has (in much the same way as is true of MacOS, with which BeOS shares many keyboard shortcuts).
BeOS has a pretty good range of options, but not the ones you are most familiar with on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

 BeOS Bible - Scripting
If you're new to the whole concept of scripting, it may be a little tough at first to sort out the difference between shell scripting and application scripting, and to understand why we've organized this chapter the way we have.
All you need to script BeOS applications is the ability to send those applications system messages, called BMessages, and the ability to find out which messages a given application will respond to.
Usually they complain about not having a standard scripting language, which means that they have to write their sample scripts in all languages or they can't distribute any sample scripts at all because they have no way of knowing what scripting language the user is going to have installed.

Bill Hayden did the obvious: He forked AtheOS (which is technically similar to BeOS) and used its app_server and Interface Kit (without the use of X11) and rest of its kits on top of the 2.4.x Linux kernel.
Bill Hayden accounced his fork on the AtheOS mailing list and made known that the "Atheos API has been merged with the BeOS API, there is PowerPC support, gcc 3.0.X compatiblity and OpenTracker/Deskbar as the desktop manager".
Most BeOS programs compile and run with little or no changes and Bill has already ported the BeOS CPU monitor, Pulse, to the system.
