Forests generally contain a large number of different trees growing to different heights, combined with an underbrush, which makes most use of sunlight.
In this case, a forest is considered to have a closed canopy, where the branches and foliage of trees interlock, whereas a woodland is considered to have an open canopy, where sunlight penetrates between trees.
A forest in its natural form is home to many animal and plant species, and the weight of the biomass in any given square kilometre is high compared to other biomes.

Brazil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Brazilian legislature, the bicameral National Congress or Congresso Nacional, includes the Federal Senate or Senado Federal of 81 seats, of which three members from each state or federal district are elected according to the principle of majority to serve eight-year terms; one-third elected after a four-year period, two-thirds elected after the next four-year period.
Brazilian democracy was replaced by dictatorship three times — 1930–1934 and 1937–1945 under Getúlio Vargas, and 1964–1985 under a succession of generals appointed by the military.
However, the Brazilian economy seems to have detached itself from politics and after a GDP increase of 0.5% in 2003, Brazil has enjoyed a robust growth in 2004 and there it is estimated that there will be moderate growth in 2005 and 2006.

17/8/2005 -- U.S. slashes estimated recreational value of national forests 90%
The new evaluation by the Bush administration cuts the estimated value of recreation in national forests from $111 billion to $11 billion, leading some environmentalists to warn that the study could be used to justify increased logging.
Those lower figures, environmentalists say, could be used as a pretext to accelerate logging and mining in national forests as a way of making them pay their fair share to the federal coffers.
Forest Service strategic planner Ross Arnold concluded that the Clinton administration's studies overestimated the number of people visiting national forests and the amount of money they would spend.

Conservation Ecology: Priority areas for establishing national forests in the Brazilian Amazon : Abstract
The Brazilian government can avoid the continued repetition of this process in frontier areas by establishing a network of National Forests (Florestas Nacionais or Flonas) to stabilize the timber industry and simultaneously protect large tracts of forest.
of forests (23% of the Brazilian Amazon) could be established as Flonas in a manner that will promote sustainable forest management; these Flonas would also serve as buffer zones for fully protected areas such as parks and reserves.
The method combines these data in a spatial database that makes it possible to model the economic potential of the region's various forests as a function of their accessibility and timber values while constraining model solutions for existing areas of protection or human occupation.
