Ambient Conditions along a highway corridor are a list of design criteria based on existing geometric conditions along those highway sections that are known to be safe and perform well.
The basis for the current highway geometric standards comes mainly from work done in the nineteen thirties and forties to respond to a rapid expansion of the road network in the U.S. In British Columbia, this expansion started in the nineteen fifties to address the unprecedented economic expansion that followed the Second World War.
In addition to the need for changes in the way the Ministry funds its highway programs, this is coinciding with the realization that the Provincial Highway Network has reached a stage of development which requires a fresh outlook in the way it is built and managed.
