Granatstein and Hillmer then expanded that article into this 200-plus-page book, with individual chapters for each prime minister except the four immediate successors to John A. Macdonald, whose combined service from 1891-1896 is disposed of in one chapter.
An actual list of 25 names was appended to the Maclean's article, indicating the presence of five female scholars amongst such luminaries as Michael Bliss, Craig Brown, Desmond Morton, Blair Neatby and Peter Waite.
The author presents one-page thumbnail sketches of Canada's 20 prime ministers, 25 governors-general since 1867 (excluding Adrienne Clarkson, who had not yet been appointed), and 36 "Fathers" of Confederation, defined as those colonial politicians from British North America who attended at least one of the formative conferences in Charlottetown, Quebec or London.

The selected politicians are listed in no particular order and their inclusion does not imply that I agree with any or all of their policies, only that I believe they had a significant influence on British politics whilst they were in power.
Widely credited as Britain’s greatest ever Prime Minister and almost certainly the most famous person to have held the post, Churchill is also one of the few people outside of the Royal Family to be honoured on his death with a state funeral.
His list is fairly close to mine, although he puts the emphasis on the successful implementation of policies and therefore Blair falls down the list somewhat with only three points out of a possible five.

British Prime Ministers: Thatcher, Margaret (1925-)
She was joint parliamentary secretary to the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance (1961-64) and secretary of state for education and science (only the second woman ever to become a Conservative cabinet minister) under Prime Minister Edward Heath (1970-74).
The Conservatives' decisive victory in the general elections of 1979, which elevated her to the prime ministry, was thought partly to have resulted from her denunciation of trade-union-induced chaos in the previous winter's strikes.
Throughout her terms Thatcher pursued the policies that earned her the appellation of "Iron Lady": strict dominance over the ministers of her cabinet; pursuance of a strong monetarist policy; increased subjection of trade unions to legal constraints; and "privatization" of state-owned enterprises.
