Steam locomotives of British Railways - Wikipedia Light!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
British Railways (BR) inherited a number of locomotives from its constituent "Big Four" companies, the vast majority of which were steam locomotives.
British Railways was created in 1948 by the merger of the big four grouped railway companies; the Great Western Railway (GWR), the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and the Southern Railway (SR).
One notable exception to the standard gauge rule was the narrow gauge Vale of Rheidol Railway in Mid-Wales, which remained operated by British Rail until 1987 and which used three steam locomotives.

British United Traction produced eleven lightweight Diesel multiple unit vehicles for British Rail during the 1950s, numbered 79740-79750.
In a geographical context, it usually applies to a person or object from, or the people or nation of ("the British") the island of Great Britain—though, confusingly, the term "British Isles" is commonly used to include also the (non-British) island of Ireland.
However, the British interpretation of the term is slightly different from the American interpretation; we can see evidence of this in the article for pigs in blankets.

SR multiple unit numbering and classification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Southern Railway created numbering and classification systems for its large fleet of electric multiple units that were perpetuated by the Southern Region of British Rail until the early 1980s, when the impact of TOPS was felt.
The Southern Region of British Rail perpetuated this method of classification, and the same principles were also adopted for diesel-electric multiple unit stock, but with single-letter codes.
NB: This was different from the system used by British Rail (adopted from the LNER) to indicate the type of non-powered coach -- see British Rail coach designations.

British Rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British Railways (BR), which later traded as British Rail, ran most of the British railway system from the nationalisation of the 'Big Four' British railway companies in 1948 until the privatisation of its railway services in stages between 1994 and 1997.
A small number of independent light railways and industrial railways, which did not contribute significant mileage to the system, were not included in British Railways; nor were the London Underground and the Glasgow Underground, which were already public concerns, the Liverpool Overhead Railway, and non-railway-owned tramways.
Unfortunately the modernisation plan failed to take into account this and the other effects that mass road transport would have upon the traditional role of the railways, and as a result much money was wasted by heavy investment in things like marshalling yards that were soon under-utilised and quickly became obsolete.
