WWI   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
This issue was particularly explosive in Canada and opened a political gap between the French-Canadians—who claimed their true loyalty was to Canada and not the British Empire—and the English-speaking majority who saw the war as a duty to both Britain and Canada, and a way of demonstrating leadership and high contribution to the British Empire.
The deaths of British merchantmen and the invulnerability of U-boats led to the development of several countermeasures: depth charges (1916), hydrophones (passive sonar, 1917), blimps, hunter-killer submarines (HMS R-1, 1917), ahead-throwing weapons, and dipping hydrophones (both abandoned in 1918).
Within a year the British were fielding tanks by the hundreds and showed their potential during the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917 by breaking the Hindenburg Line while combined arms teams captured 8000 enemy soldiers and 100 guns.

This period saw the rise of the political "clubs" in French politics, foremost among these the Jacobin Club: according to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, one hundred and fifty-two clubs had affiliated with the Jacobins by 10 August 1790.
The new régime met with opposition from remaining Jacobins and the royalists.
On 9 November 1799 (18 Brumaire of the Year VIII) Napoleon staged the coup of 18 Brumaire which installed the Consulate; this effectively led to his dictatorship and eventually (in 1804) to his proclamation as emperor, which brought to a close the specifically republican phase of the French Revolution.

Alliances of the Regiments of the British Empire and Commonwealth
New World many colonial corps were raised to fight first the French competition for territory, and then in a futile attempt to suppress the secessionist revolution of a significant number of colonials.
In 1924 the restriction of one alliance per Dominion regiment with one British regiment was lifted, and in 1931 the practice was extended to individual batteries of artillery.
Thus the alliance between The Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps and The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment (stemming from the WWI service by a BVRC contingent in the British regiment) is perpetuated by their successors, The Bermuda Regiment and The Royal Anglian Regiment.
