It noted that the Corps has more often than not performed actions of a non-naval nature, including its roles in the War of 1812, WWI and the Korean War, its famous actions at Tripoli and Chapultepec, and their numerous counterinsurgency and occupational duties in Central America and East Asia.
At its founding, the Marine Corps was composed of infantry serving aboard naval vessels, responsible for the security of the ship and her crew by conducting offensive and defensive combat during boarding actions, and defending the ship's officers from mutiny.
The Corps adopted the Marine Corps emblem in 19 November 1868.
