  U.K. scientists plan project to save rare mammals : Environment
LONDON: British scientists are launching a project aiming to save some of the rarest and most neglected species of animals in the world from extinction.
The bumblebee bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai), believed to be the world's smallest mammal, is the sole member of the Craseonycterudae family of bats, and is thought to have last shared a common ancestor with another species about 43 million years ago.
The list had been cross-referenced with the International Conservation Union's official list of endangered species to identify the 10 priority animals.

The "distinct population segment" policy is designed to clarify that term for listing, delisting, or reclassifying species under the Endangered Species Act and applies to vertebrate animals that many be endangered or threatened in part of their range but are more numerous elsewhere.
In the case of the lynx, a distinct population segment means that lynx in the lower 48 United States are considered discreet in that this population is delineated by an international political boundary that coincides with differences in status and management.

British Columbia is a bit out of our region but we love spreading good news so here goes: The Vancouver Sun last week reported on the addition of 45 species to British Columbia's list of protected at-risk plants and wildlife.
Canadian conservationists are appropriately skeptical about the on-the-ground impact of the new list since neither Canada nor British Columbia have anything quite like our own Endangered Species Act, but acknowledging species that are in trouble is always a critical first step to effective conservation and our congrats go to the folks that made this happen.
The longer a species is listed under the Act the more likely it is to be stable or improving (i.e., it takes time to reverse the downward spiral).
