Power Pop first surfaced in the early 70's and its invention is generally credited to a trio of bands that were fairly underappreciated in their own time: Badfinger (from Wales), Big Star (Memphis), and the Raspberries (Mentor, OH).
A great list, bro, the most recent successful practicioner of the sound that coulda made it on the top twenty list, anyway, would be Matthew Sweet, who, as with all power pop artists, ultimately has released a bunch of pop songs that aren't, you know, popular!

King returned to Decca Records in the 1970s, but was unable to reverse the company's gradual decline, which resulted in its sale at the very end of the decade to Polygram Records.

British folk-rock guitar phenom Richard Thompson is one of those critic's faves who has never been a major commercial force despite a lengthy career.
There are a couple of smooth, upbeat pop songs with hummable refrains ("Restless Highway"; title track); the ballad "Sweet Surrender" is syrupy but beautiful; "Died For Love" is an elaborately arranged, cleverly tension-building effort; and the chilling character sketch "Pavanne" is one of their best tunes.
Ironically, an early version of the album with the same track listing was recorded in 1980 with Gerry Rafferty producing, but a half-dozen labels turned it down.

OH is performing "Banks of the Nile" at Joe's Pub in his songs of the millennium survey, and I like to think that it's partly as a tribute to the only bandmate he's ever had who was his musical equal----Sandy Denny.
After years in lurkdom (or whatever it should be called when one mostly accumulates digests without reading them!), I thought I should pop back in from this new address to thank Susan Spurgeon (and her husband Bill)and Brian Miller for keeping me sane on line at Joe's Pub on Saturday night.
