 Britpop
Britpop is the common term used for a variety of popular British bands from the early 90s to today.
The strongest influences on Britpop arose from the "indie" bands of the eighties, such as The Smiths, and its successors: "baggy", typified by Manchester's (or should that be Madchester's) The Happy Mondays and "shoegazing" bands such as Ride or Stereolab.
Unlike their predecessors, Britpop crossed firmly into the mainstream, exemplified by chart battles between rivals Blur and Oasis.

Considering the source of the list is an Australian music news site (a fun one, too, Undercover by name) and the presence of Robbie Williams, big everywhere except the USA, and Swedish dance artist Eric Prydz, this was probably an Australian or maybe a British survey.

Shoegaze bands were notoriously crowd-adverse and poor interview subjects; in some cases it may have been schtick, but in other cases the musicians really weren't very communicative, either as artistic statement or as a side effect of drug consumption.
One of the few long-lived bands on this list, Catherine Wheel was initially considered a major shoegaze band, a title the band hated.
Their later work is more in a electronica/dream pop vein, but the noise pop lessons learned during the shoegaze era still inform their music.

Before that they were just a bunch of young English musicians who discovered a secret passageway into the Beatles’ mine.
And no matter how old they get, nobody can take away the fact that the BritPop bands briefly inspired a generation of rockers to believe in the power of attitude and music – as it should be.

Yes, Blair and his people co-opted the rise of `Cool Britannia' to their cause, and Britpop was a part of Cool Britannia idea, but the author doesn't make a very strong cause for the association with Blair being a major part for the sell-out, and therefore end, of Britpop.
