List of Canadian federal electoral districts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of Canada's 308 electoral districts (also known as ridings in Canadian English) as defined by the 2003 Representation Order, which came into effect on May 23, 2004.
Electoral districts are constituencies that elect Members of Parliament to Canada's House of Commons every election.
Canadians elected members for each electoral district in the 2006 Canadian federal election.

This article is part of WikiProject Electoral districts in Canada, an attempt to better organize information in articles related to Electoral districts in Canada.
To clarify the original point by the way, there are electoral districts such as Rivière-du-Loup?Montmagny that contain both hyphens and mdashes, due to the French-language standard of using hyphens in place names (for instance, "St. Louis" in English is "St-Louis" in French).
There are 12 Quebec federal ridings that share their names with provincial ridings, but have different borders (since the provincial ridings are smaller).

The Canadian Electoral System: A Case Study   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Indeed, over the years, the federal electoral system moved even more closely to the pure FPTP plurality model as the few two-member districts that existed were gradually eliminated.
The Task Force on Canadian Unity (Pepin-Robarts Commission) in its 1979 Report included a recommendation for just over 20 percent of the seats in the House of Commons to be accorded to the parties proportional to their support and from those provinces in which there was underrepresentation.
Electoral reform toward a more proportional system was proposed by a number of columnists and editorialists in the wake of the two elections, and raised by the leaders of the Progressive Conservative Party, but only wistfully.

Electoral Systems (BP334E)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
List systems have been criticized because they place considerable power in the hands of political parties, since they determine the order in which candidates names appear on the ballot --- and thus which candidates are most likely to assume office.
A majoritarian electoral system may thus be viewed as a divisive factor in a country with distinct regions, since parties have incentives (in terms of electoral rewards) to make strong regional appeals.
Variants of the party list system that allow voters to chose either from among a party's candidates or between the candidates on several parties' lists allow voters a truer expression of their preferences.

The Reform Party (which became the Canadian Alliance in 2000) displaced the Progressive Conservatives as the major right-wing force at the federal level, but the party was unable to mount an effective challenge to the Liberals, who dominated Canadian federal politics from 1993 to 2006.
Except "in circumstances viewed by the commission as being extraordinary", the population of each electoral district must be within plus or minus twenty-five percent of the average electoral district population for the province.

Federal elections must be held every five years, and the candidate within a constituency who receives the most votes is elected for that constituency and the political party whose members win the most seats will form the government and the leader of that party will ordinarily become Prime Minister of the country.
Federal bills are also assigned numbers in addition to a letter signifying where the bill originated: bill C-5 signifies the bill originated in the House of Commons; bill S-11 signifies the bill originated in the Senate.
Canadian federal and provincial legislation is generally not consolidated by subject matter but is instead published in its official version alphabetically by name of the statute or regulation, unlike the situation with the United States Code and many state codes.

When the votes were counted, however, 64% of the PEI electorate voted against the proposal; only 2 of the 27 ridings saw a majority in favour of electoral change.
Voters would only cast one vote and the district seats would be compensatory; the filling of district seats would be based on the shares of the party vote in the combined single-member ridings for that district, and filled from party lists.
The party list half are allocated in a manner that tries to provide a party with a total share of the seats in the legislature that is roughly proportional to their share of the party-list vote.

The record in Canadian federal elections is somewhat better, but the system is hardly efficient at manufacturing majorities; it did so on only half the occasions between 1921 and 1965 when the winning party did not have a majority of the popular vote.
Canadian experience with PR is limited, but there is a thriving lobby among some academics, journalists and political parties for changes to the present electoral system.
Canadians tend to agitate for PR after particularly appalling distortions, such as the outcome of the 1980 federal election that left the liberal majority government without a seat in the western provinces, despite a healthy share of the popular vote there.
