Canada is a federation of ten provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan) and three territories (Northwest Territories, Yukon, and as of April 1, 1999, Nunavut).
On April 1, 1999, the Northwest Territories were officially divided to create a new territory in the east that would be governed by Canada's Inuits, who make up 85% of the area's population.
In the east the mountainous maritime provinces have an irregular coastline on the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic.

The vast area outside of the 7 provinces then existing formed the Northwest Territories, but over the years much of it would be transferred to three existing provinces, two new ones (Alberta and Saskatchewan, 1905), and two new territories (Yukon, 1898; Nunavut, 1999).
As no land was lost, and all Canadian interests were defended, it can be said that the only side to lose as a result of the war were the Native Americans, who were no longer protected by the British from expansion by the United States.
