Telephone - free-definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The early history of the telephone is a confusing morass of claim and counterclaim, which was not clarified by the huge mass of lawsuits which hoped to resolve the patent claims of individuals.
The primitive telephone was rapidly improved, the double electromagnet being replaced by a single bar magnet having a small coil or bobbin of fine wire surrounding one pole, in front of which a thin disc of ferrotype is fixed in a circular mouthpiece, and serves as a combined membrane and armature.
It fully or partially owned the telephone companies that provided service to about 80% of the telephones in the country and also owned Western Electric, which manufactured or purchased virtually all the equipment and supplies used by the local telephone companies.

 Canadian Immigration Records
Although passenger lists, or lists of passengers, were created for most ships arriving at Canadian ports, there was no formal archiving of these lists until 1865, for the port of Quebec.
Passenger lists for steam ships were mostly created by British pursers, and their knowledge of foreign naming practices may have been limited.
Albans Lists: From 1895, in addition to the Canadian ship list, there could also be a US record in the immigration records at the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) called the "St. Albans Lists." The St. Albans lists are actually several publications.
