One of the earliest and prominent composers in South India was the saint, and wandering devine singer of yore Purandara Dasa (1480-1564).
In Carnatic music, the sampurna ragas (the ones that have seven notes in their scales) are classified into the melakarta system, which groups them according to the kinds of notes that they have.
Carnatic music, known as karnātaka sangītam (கர்னாடக சங்கீதம் in Tamil, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸಂಗೀತ in Kannada, కర్నాటక సంగీతం in Telugu, കര്‍‌ണാടക സംഗീതം in Malayalam, कर्णाटक सङ्गीतं in Devanagari) is the form of Indian classical music that had its origins in Southern India.

Thyagaraja can justly be considered the greatest figure in Carnatic music.He was born in Tiruvarur,one of the chief centers of Nadaswaram music and moved to Thanjavur the hub of all musical activity.To paraphrase the Late Rangaramanujam Iyengar(the great Thyagaraja Scholar) Thyagaraja's pre-eminence among Composers rests on both musical and non-musical factors.
It is not known how many songs were composed by Thyagaraja.We are hoping to provide the entire list of 690 compositions listed in " Kritimanimalai" published by Late Rangaramanujam Iyengar.
RARE pictures of this aspect of Thyagaraja Festival at Thiruvaiyaru are presented in both sides of this article.
