The Virginia Area Region Limited Access Caves list includes all the caves in the Virginia Region of the NSS that are known to have access restrictions placed on them.
Caves are listed by state and county with an index in the left frame.
With the large number of restricted caves in the Region, it should be obvious that all cavers must practice the usual rules of caving courtesy.

The input of food in most caves is primarily derived from the sea itself in the form of plankton carried in by tidal currents.
The pool of Bassett's Cave, referred to in 1837 as the longest and geologically most instructive cave in Bermuda, was used by the U.S. Navy as a cesspit for disposal of raw sewage and waste fuel oil.
Since many of Bermuda's cave species are endemic and are often restricted to only one cave or cave system, pollution or destruction of these habitats can result in the extinction of entire species.

Cave and karst systems are important because most of the nation's freshwater resources are groundwater, of which about 25% is located in cave and karst regions.
In the caves of Arizona's Grand Canyon and in lava tubes of El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico, important archeological discoveries are made every year in the form of excavations of ancient pottery, figurines made from twigs and evidence of the use of caves for habitation.
Caves in Colorado tend to occur in the mountains, where limestone and confirs are abundant, rather than in desert regions of the state.

 List of Virginia Caves
Cave names change - Grand Caverns near Grottoes (Waynesboro) is the oldest commercial show cave in America - but look in the old records under its former name of Weyers Cave.
In the process, they are also restoring the historic name of the cave to "Gap Cave." Thomas Jefferson referred to it in his "Notes on the State of Virginia:
The deepest cave in Virginia (with the greatest relief between "top" and "bottom") is Burns Cave in Highland County, with 786 feet of relief.

One of the few caves in the state does occur, at least partly, in carbonate rocks in the Killdeer Mountains, but it was formed by slope failure, not dissolution.

One of the ways to truly appreciate the tremendous impact that the unique maps and descriptions of Bernie Smeltzer have made on the caving world is to look back on the list of caves he indelibly left his mark upon.
Hope and Jeff Uhl compiled this list as part of an exhibition at the 1992 NSS Convention held in Salem, Indiana.
