Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the job of having the ultimate executive responsibility or authority within anorganization or corporation.
The CEO may also be the chairman of the board or the company president insmall businesses, but these roles are often separated in larger organizations, to prevent the company from becoming dominated bya single personality, and to prevent a conflict of interest against the owners (the shareholders).
By comparision of CEO with CFO as strategic business partner and statutory duties underSEC and Sarbanes-Oxley Act, both are equal ranking top executive and separate posts.

Typically the chief executive is also a director of his or her own firm and often chairs the board of directors.

Chief Executive, The: Third annual Route to the Top: pinball wizards - study on CEOs - includes CEO profiles
While average CEO age has declined only slightly - from 59 in 1980 to 57 in 1997 - the number of chief executives in their 50s increased from 45 percent to 64 percent; at the same time, 60-something CEOs now make tip only a quarter of all Fortune 100 CEOs, down from half.
Tenure in the CEO office has also declined, with 60 percent having spent five years or fewer in their jobs in 1997, compared with 40 percent for the same category in 1980.
An overall younger CEO today explains this partially; but the lower average tenure is more indicative of a greater number of CEOs being recruited from the outside earlier in their careers.

 General Managers and Top Executives
The chief executive officer of a corporation retains overall accountability; however, a chief operating officer may be delegated several responsibilities, including the authority to oversee executives who direct the activities of various departments and implement the organization’s policies on a day-to-day basis.
Chief executive officers often become members of the board of directors of one or more firms, typically as a director of their own firm and often as chair of its board of directors.
Because many executives who leave their jobs transfer to other executive or managerial positions, however, openings for new entrants are limited and intense competition is expected for top managerial jobs.

Bonanza for US top executives continues despite falling corporate profits   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Chief executive officers of major US corporations extracted substantial increases in salaries, bonuses and stock options in 2000, even as stock prices fell, layoffs mounted and profits plummeted as a result of the economic downturn.
The continued rise in executive pay further undercuts the rationale that has been used to justify this gross waste of society's resources: that the massive pay-outs serve as an incentive to improve corporate performance.
In order to get around this, executives have demanded that they be issued new stock options at a lower price or have their existing options re-priced in order to allow them to realize continued profits.
