This is in reference to the rules in Chinese Chess or Xiangqi, the 'horse' piece can only move in the 'sun' character (日 or a 1x2 rectangle) pattern.
I actually think the Chinese characters for the Hakka Chinese selection are easier to read for Chinese beginner learners (because I translate them myselves and was able to understand them literally).
Rest assured that none of the above listed are cases of vandalism.
