Christianity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Western Christianity in the Middle Ages was characterized by cooperation and conflict between the secular rulers and the Church under the Pope, and by the development of scholastic theology and philosophy.
As the European Enlightenment took hold, Christianity was confronted with the discoveries of science (including the heliocentric model and the theory of evolution), and with the development of biblical criticism (linked to the development of Christian Fundamentalism) and modern political ideologies such as Liberalism, Nationalism and Socialism.
Christian mobs, sometimes with government support, have destroyed pagan temples and oppressed adherents of paganism (such as the philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, who was murdered by a Christian mob).

Perhaps the greatest dogmatic divisions since the time of the division between the Sadduccees and Pharisees two millennia ago, are the divisions within the Ashkenazic community that have arisen in the past two centuries, ever since the Enlightenment and the Renaissance began to penetrate the boundaries of northern and eastern European Jewish communities.
In the late 18th century Europe, and then the rest of the world, was swept by a group of intellectual, social and political movements that taken together were referred to as the Enlightenment.
Others, however, noted that this same era allowed Jews, for the first time, the ability to easily assimilate into Christian society; this was a powerful attraction for many Jews, since only by becoming a Christian (at least nominally) would one be certain to have equal rights and civil liberties.

Christianity is an Abrahamic religion based on the life, teachings, death by crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth as described in the New Testament.
Crucial beliefs in Christian teaching are Jesus' incarnation, atonement, crucifixion, and resurrection from the dead to redeem humankind from sin and death; and the belief that the New Testament is a part of the Bible.
During the Crusades, Christian atrocities against Jews in German and Hungarian towns, later also in those of France and England, and in the massacres of non-combatants in Palestine and Syria initiated a tradition of Christian anti-Semitism, which was further bolstered by the blood libel cult, and continued into the 1500s by the Spanish Inquisition.

 Major Religions Ranked by Size
The list was created by the same people who collected and organized this database, in consultation with university professors of comparative religions and scholars from different religions.
A listing of doctrinally and organizationally meaningful divisions or denominational "branches" (such as Catholic, Eastern/Orthodox Christian, Sunni Islam, Shiite Islam, Evangelical Christian, Mahayana Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism, etc.) would clearly be useful, but that is the subject of a different list: Major Branches of Major World Religions.
This list is based primarily on the degree of doctrinal/theological similarity among all the various sub-groups which belong to these classifications, and to a lesser extent based on diversity in practice, ritual and organization.

Religious Movements in the United States (Miller)
Some were solidly grounded in Christianity, America’s longstanding dominant faith, albeit with some twists that separated them from the Christian mainstream, in a fashion not unlike that of earlier NRMs such as Mormonism and Christian Science.
Their common denominator is their marginal social status, not any particular doctrine, organizational pattern, leadership style, or ritual practice.
Certain types of Christianity (especially evangelical Protestantism) are held to represent the one true faith, and religions that fall very far beyond that pale need to be countered simply because as nonchristian, or incorrectly Christian, faiths they are erroneous.

Christian truth is being challenged as never before by philosophies that are opposed to sound Bible teaching and preaching.
Christians must know the Bible, but they also must be prepared to answer numerous subtle perversions of Bible truth - modernism, ecumenism, the Charismatic movement, a never-ending multiplicity of Bible versions, Christian rock, psychology, positivism and easy-believism, just to name a few.
