Judges are considered to be the leaders of one of the three branches of government, the judiciary.
Circuit Judges are addressed as "Your Honour" and all lower judges, magistrates, and chairs of tribunals are addressed as "Sir" or "Madam".
Judges of courts of specialized jurisdiction (such as bankruptcy courts or juvenile courts) were sometimes known officially as "referees," but the use of this title is in decline.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: England (Since the Reformation)
This statute severed England from the unity of Christendom and transferred the jurisdiction of the supreme pontiff to "the Imperial Crown" of that realm.
Judges who refused to fall in with his plans were dismissed; and it was held by a bench packed with his creatures that his dispensation could be pleaded in bar of an Act of Parliament.
The establishment of the society was sanctioned by the archbishops and bishops of England and by the vicars Apostolic of Scotland (the hierarchy in that country was not restored until 1878), and was emphatically approved by Pius IX.

 Criminal Courts Review
Certainly, a judge should not undertake the role of the prosecutor, for example by calling further prosecution witnesses in order to pursue a case that the prosecuting advocate has decided it is not proper to pursue.
In the main, judges should be able to rely, on the one hand, on the competence and sense of public duty of the prosecutor to protect the public interest and, on the other, on the defence advocate to know what is in the best interest of the defendant.
The start of most summings-up consists in the judge reading or rehearsing adapted versions of the appropriate specimen directions to the jury, who are expected to take them all in and retain them in their mind for their later deliberations.

The last time the number of circuit judges was increased was 1990, and court officials say new judgeships are needed to meet the demands of a workload that is increasingly heavy -- particularly with immigration cases.
The concern among judges is that there is a cost to having the highest caseload in the country -- the judges cannot dedicate the time they want to the cases they have.
With 28 active judges and several senior judges who continue to hear cases, the 9th Circuit is easily the largest appellate court in the country.

Though a number of judges have been put on federal courts through recess appointments over the past century (Clinton put Roger Gregory on the 4th Circuit this way), the practice was unknown before that and is of doubtful constitutionality.
The 11th Circuit recently agreed, at Ted Kennedy's behest, to decide whether Pryor should be permitted to continue hearing cases, i.e., whether (a) the court has jurisdiction to decide the issue and (b) the appointment was unconstitutional.
