Cleveland Rapid Transit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cleveland Rapid Transit (generally known as The Rapid) is the name of the rail rapid-transit system in Cleveland, Ohio, owned by the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.
They are all that remains of Cleveland's once-extensive streetcar system, though the lines currently run modern light rail equipment rather than PCC cars.
The sharing of one route between light and heavy rail is quite unusual, and the shared stations have platforms of varying heights to accommodate the two kinds of trains.

WMATA Washington D.C. Metro System Overview
Most stations (except a few on the Orange line) have sheet metal pylons on their platforms and mezzanines; these are enameled in dark brown and have white lettering indicating the station name running sideways up the pylon.
The station lighting is indirect - a mixture of mercury-vapor lamps (in the crowns of the pylons), and flourescent tubes (located at the bases of the station walls).
A reason for the architecture change between the older stations and the newer ones was simply an economy measure: the Arch design stations use concrete panels, pre-cast in Winchester, VA then hauled underground and erected.

The Returning City: Historic Preservation and Transit in the Age of Civic Revival PART A
The rebirth of these historic stations is only part of the much larger story of how transit, urban revitalization, and historic preservation are working in concert to bring back our city and town centers.
Transit systems have stages of development and maturity and are at specific stages of maturity in different parts of their own systems.

Financing Transit Systems Through Value Capture
As a result, area within a quarter mile radius of a transit line or station is considered to have better access than other areas, providing benefits to residents and businesses due to reduced transportation costs and access to a larger pool of potential services, jobs, customers and employees.
For many years these experts assumed that transit accessibility was being displaced in importance by automobile accessibility, but in recent years there has been increasing recognition of the potential importance of public transit, and therefore the potential that proximity to quality transit service can increase nearby property values (Litman, 2002).
The housing near two of the stations those residents lived in did lease at building rents that were 10%-15% higher; around the third (Richmond) no rent premium was found.

 clevescene.com News Derailed 2000-12-21
Unlike in other towns, Cleveland's rapid lines are so old that there's little evidence here of how a new station can spark development.
RTA is also hoping to make the Waterfront Line -- the only new rapid line it's built in the last 30 years -- a complete loop, extending it from the Flats and the lakefront south past Playhouse Square, Cleveland State University, and Cuyahoga Community College.
So our rapid lines only serve two suburbs, stopping in many sparsely populated neighborhoods, but not reaching some of the most dense ones.

Finally, perhaps the best-known feature of bus rapid transit is what planners call "intelligent transportation systems." A device will transmit a bus's position and speed, through centralized computers, to a traffic light as the bus approaches.
When bus rapid transit is finally in place, the changes will probably include designated bus lanes that will not compete with parked cars for space.
New York City Transit, whose buses run on some of the most congested streets in the world, says it would be delighted to achieve even half of those speed gains.

 Bus Rapid Transit Central
With the FTA’s waiting list of costly New Start rail projects approaching 100, and traffic congestion continuing to grow in metropolitan areas throughout the country, transit operators are being advised to consider an innovative alternative – Bus Rapid Transit.
The resulting service, now being packaged as Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT, promises to bring faster, cheaper relief to all but a handful of the nation’s busiest, most densely populated corridors.
Likewise, in Cleveland, an electrified busway being developed along downtown Euclid Avenue, is attempting to use better transit service as well as streetscape improvements as catalysts for redevelopment.

Drawing from interviews with transit workers, Snyder looks at their lives from many perspectives, from the varied elements of operation (stations, shops, policing, etc.) to the the social issues that affect every occupation in distinctive ways (race, women's issues, unionization, age).
The result is an engaging narrative that charmingly shows the human component of the transit system and implicitly offers us insight into the complex humanity associated with all infrastructure.

BigSoccer Boards - So apparently Cleveland is official.
Downtown does have some advantages: great bars, decent places to eat, rapid transit trains, etc. Don't know how they'll feel about tailgating, but I'd guess that certain areas, like around the football stadium, would be fine.
