Colorado ranks third in the nation for the amount of private acres protected by state land trusts through conservation easements and other means, according to a new study by the Land Trust Alliance.
While Pitkin County does not contain enough large tracts of private land to hold a top rank on a list of Colorado counties in terms of sheer number of private acres conserved, the area historically has been a leader in private land conservation.
The Aspen Valley Land Trust, which began as the Pitkin County Parks Association in 1967, is the oldest in Colorado and an acknowledged leader in the state, said executive director Martha Cochran.

El Paso County was originally overlooked on the list of Colorado counties approved to receive Federal aid for storm related costs, but may not be overlooked for much longer.
El Paso County was originally kept off the list because measurements taken from the Colorado Springs Airport.
The county said it is still adding up all the costs from the storm, but if FEMA approves the request El Paso County will receive federal assistance covering 75% of the costs incurred for snow removal as well as emergency protective measures.
