BIOT was established as a territory of the United Kingdom on November 8, 1965, consisting of Chagos Archipelago, Aldabra, Farquhar and Desroches (Des Roches) islands.
The territory is a possession of the United Kingdom administered by a commissioner, who is resident in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.
As a territory of the United Kingdom, its head of state is Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and the head of government is Commissioner Tony Crombie (since January 2004, replacing David Ross MacLennan) and Administrator Tony Humphries (since February 2005, replacing Charles A. Hamilton), all of whom reside in the UK.

Tom Crean's incredible story of endurance and survival on the Antarctic ice was largely forgotten for 90 years Michael Smith, developed his highly acclaimed biography of this Antarctic survivor, giving Crean his proper due.
In the afternoon the 1948 film 'Scott of the Antarctic', starring Sir John Mills and with music by Vaughan Williams, was shown, followed by a 'The Shackleton Forum' - a question and answer session with The Hon.
Also featured was The Antarctic Adventurers group, who will recreated a three man sledging party of the of the classic period of Antarctic exploration, complete with sledge, tent, sleeping bags and all the necessary equipment.
