Cornish has been granted official protection under the provisions of a European Union charter on "minority languages," paving the way for schoolchildren to be taught and speak it.
The new ruling does not yet give Cornish the status of Welsh, which must used in official documents, be taught in schools and be used on state-owned media under Part III of the European charter, but campaigners believe that this may come.
Modern Cornish was reconstructed from historical fragments such as translations of the Creed and The Lord's Prayer by Victorian enthusiasts.

Cornish was dying because of the attitude towards it by the English.
Cornish speakers refused to pass on the Cornish language to their Children insisting they learned only English and even in some cases they changed their name to a more English sounding one.
There is a list of amendments and correction of errors on the publishers website, but it is a pity that it wasn't proof read before publication especially as the publishers spent a lot of time criticising George's dictionary for the very same reason.

Well A couple of people have asked some questions about Cornish over the last few days, paticularly about the different dialects that are used today and so I hope that I can answer a few of those questions.
Now many people felt unified cornish was inacurate, Tim Saunders (who studied Celtic studies here at Aber) criticised it in 1972 mainly because of the inconsistencies between written cornish and its prenounciation often finding it differed from original texts.
At the Cornish Language weekend over easter Ken gave a lecture on his new dictionary which I am sure was riveting, but the problem was that he gave it all in Cornish and I had been drinking till the early morning hours so I had a little bit of trouble following him....

Don't get me wrong: I don't want Cornish to be dead; I love languages, and I traveled on my own initiative to the Isle of Man when I was an undergraduate in 1968 so that I could go and see the last native speaker of Manx, Ned Maddrell, and record him telling a story.
With Cornish the chance of doing anything was pretty well over before the 19th century began.
It would not be sensible for the EU to encourage the idea of adding it to the already frightening list of languages they have to arrange translation into and out of.

This week, the Truro office released a list of over 1,000 unusual names found in censuses and births, deaths and marriage records in Cornwall dating back as far as the 16th Century.
Perhaps the scriptwriters of Emmerdale plundered the archives for inspiration as the list shows a Charity Dingle was baptised in South Petherwin in 1702.

Most people in the United Kingdom see it as a holiday destination while the Cornish see it as a country in its own right, only incidentally connected with England.
The last native Cornish speaker is popularly supposed to have been Dolly Pentreath who died in 1777 and is buried in Paul churchyard, near Newlyn.
This does not stop the Cornish from asserting their difference from the English metropolitan culture which has changed so much of their culture.

There has been very little recorded and certainly no one has listed the full range of dolls, created by the three ladies who started the cottage industry in the early 1950's.

The Cornish flag in use today is a white upright cross centred on a fl field, and is referred to as the St. Piran's (or Pirran's) cross.
Given that tin mining was Cornwall's main industry (the original Cornish national toast and motto was 'Kober, Sten ha Pesk', or 'Copper, Tin and Fish', referring to the three core occupations of Cornish life), it is unsurprising that the patron saint of tinners should also become the patron saint of the country.
It is the Cornish flag (St Piran's Cross) with the addition of the United Kingdom union flag in the canton (like the Royal Navy's white ensign).
