The Czech lands (in Czech: české země) is an auxiliary term used mainly for Bohemia + Moravia + Czech Silesia, today identical with the Czech Republic.

The Czechs name Přemysl (Premysl or Przemysl) as the reputed ancestor of the line of dukes and kings which ruled in the Czech lands from 873 or earlier until the murder of Wenceslaus III in 1306.

Czech literacy was in existence at least from the tenth century, and literature written for secular entertainment as well as religious edification developed in the thirteenth.
The Czechs also got the government to change the rules so that it became necessary for most officials and clerks working for the state anywhere on Czech territory to be fluent in both languages.

 A Brief History of the Czech Lands
One day, as the story goes, the Czech nobles refused to be ruled over by a woman, Princess Libuše, any longer; she told them to follow her horse till it led them to Přemysl, her husband-to-be, ploughing in a field.
When, however, a 14th-century chronicler writes that “German speech is commoner than Czech almost in all towns and at the court”, this may be taken as referring in particular to the speech habits of the upper nobility and prosperous burghers.
In 1878-9 the Czechs recognised the failure of their policy of passive resistance by returning to the Bohemian diet and the Reichsrat, joining a government coalition under Count Taaffe along with the German clericals, aristocrats and Poles.

 Archives and Archivists in the Czech Lands
Both the Czech Court Chancery and the Austrian Court Chancery was abolished in 1749 to be replaced by joint chanceries, directorium in publicis et cameralibus and the Supreme Court.
It was only the Presidium Directive of the Czech Gubernium issued on January 6, 1805 and relating to the registration of documents up to the year 1700 stored in municipal archives and their supervision, which eventually led to the compilation of inventories (numbering as many as 61).
Listed in the Dictionary are archivists active in the Czech Lands as well as those who do or did work in other countries but who come from the Czech Lands regardless of their nationality, level of education and specialisation.

The modern Czech language (Standard Czech) is generally based on the medieval literary Czech (approximately its state in the 16th century).
Czech is their official language, and if you want to have a real cultural experience rather than getting by on your English, then I would recommend looking into this product.
I visited the Czech Republic also, and found that many of their street signs, signs in general were in Czech, and it was really useful for me to look it up in the phrasebook.

At that time, Bohemia was part of the Holy Roman Empire and that with the assumption to the throne of Charles V of Austria (and I of Spain), the territories of the Holy Roman Empire were united with those of Spain (including the Spanish New World possessions), Burgundy, and the Low Countries until 1556.
When the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed in the wake of barbarian invasions around A.D. 479, many of the rulers of the former Eastern half of the Roman Empire (which became the Byzantine Empire) regarded themselves as the torchbearers of the legacy of Rome and of Ancient Greece.
