Tales From the Database - Mile High Comics, Chuck Rozanski
The purpose of my trip was to attend the DC Comics RRP meeting, a special event that DC hosts every couple of years in order to foster direct interaction between the DC editorial and marketing staffs and leading comics retailers.
DC revealed some specific editorial plans, including the launch early next year of ----, a 52-installment weekly series that sure looks like it is going to add fuel to DC's gathering sales momentum.
They may, indeed, still manage to somehow keep their #1 position in the comics marketplace during 2006, but after all the positive energy I saw at last weekend's DC Comics RRP meetings, I can't help but believe their days at #1 are numbered.

DC Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The concept of a shared universe was originally pioneered by the DC Comics (originally known as National Periodical Publications) and in particular by writer Gardner Fox.
The fact that DC Comics Characters coexisted in the same world was first established in All-Star Comics #3 (1940) where several superheroes (who starred in separate stories in the series up to that point) met each other, and soon founded the superhero team, the Justice Society of America.
As a result, almost once per decade since the 1980s, the DC Universe experiences a major crisis that allows any number of changes from new versions of characters to appear to a whole reboot of the universe, restarting nominally all the characters into a new and modernized version of their lives.

Their adventures followed the flow of other DC comics starting with "Strange Adventures", veering toward superheroics (during the Bat Craze), to occult menaces, through Bermuda Triangle weirdness, and finally to cancellation (1979).
DC pushed "adventure" titles such as The Shadow and Tarzan (and paid to license both).
In Amalgam Comics, the Challs were amalgamated with their super-powered counterparts, the Fantastic Four, to form the Challengers of the Fantastic.

CHS: Comics: Heroes, Heartthrobs & Horrors
To discuss the history of the comic book art form, one must first define what is meant by “comic book art.” The definition is debatable, but for the purposes of this discussion, I will loosely define the art form as a combination of text and images, depicting events and characters in a sequence.
DC’s Wonder Woman and Marvel’s Nick Fury – both heroes with their origins in the Golden Age – were reworked as Cold War super-spies (inspired by the television show The Avengers and the popular James Bond movies, respectively).
Many specialized comic book-related organizations (for example, Friends of Lulu, an organization devoted to the promotion of women in the industry) are able to both reach a wider audience and to focus their attention on audiences with a niche interest.

Comic books, unlike the comic strips that appeared in the newspaper, suffered the additional handicap of being perceived as a medium for children, a perception that led to nationwide attempts to regulate their content and distribution.
In examining decency crusades against comic books, it is important to keep in perspective the fact that this criticism was occurring simultaneously with critiques of other aspects of youth culture such as fashions, radio and television, and rock music.
Whereas earlier objections to comic books had focused upon comic books’ status as popular culture and therefore detracting from more worthy pursuits, it is during the post-War era that comic books began to be regarded as a threat, inspiring calls to action against the industry.
