 Darkover series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The time periods the books belong in, particularly the ones in the Ages of Chaos and the Hundred Kingdoms Era, are blurred.
Reflecting on that some books state they are in one era, and then there is evidence with story lines lining up to support where it goes while the chronology in the books state there are a different era, the books are in order as their story falls into place.
The Comyn are the main seven laran-gifted families of Darkover, the descendants of human-chieri pairings.

Early in the series, the society of Darkover is patriarchal, with a level of technology equivalent to medieval times on Earth.
Darkover wants no part of technology, and keeps the powers of "laran" a secret as long as possible.
There are a few other Darkover books which MZB wrote earlier on and does not include in her own list in the beginning pages of her books.

These are books that I have read (or will read) multiple times, and have (or plan to get) in hardcover.
When I first examined this book in a bookstore, I read the back cover, snorted "you've got to be kidding me", and put it back on the shelf.
These first four books were excellent, though the sequels that followed after did not meet the same level of quality.

The books read well in any order -- although they are connected, the author didn't write them in anything resembling the order in which they occur, and many are separated by long periods of time from the others.
David Gemmell: This author's books are full of tension, physical danger, and heroes that are larger-than-life and yet somehow touchingly human.

 'Dragonholder' Gives McCaffrey Fans a Closer Look
While the book bills itself as "The Life and Dreams (So Far) of Anne McCaffrey", the narrative actually makes an abrupt stop after about 1975, when McCaffrey settled into a permanent home at her Irish farm, Dragonhold.
The book's target audience will likely consider these flaws to be minor ones.
McCaffrey fans will be thrilled to hear about the inspirations behind her most famous stories, and the book itself is a handsome keepsake, with good paper and a curling page and dragon motif in the margins.

The chapter two of book one (pages 39 to 57) of Sharra's Exile was already published in a slightly different form as a short story: Blood will tell in The keeper's price.

As the book closes, he talks about the past, wonders how men could give up their individuality, and charts a future in which they will regain it.
A couple of references to the book include the fact that Sandra Bullock's character is named Lenina Huxley, a mix of Lenina Crowne and Aldous Huxley, and a scene where Lenina Huxley tells John Spartan (Stallone's character), "John, you're a savage!", calling John the Savage to mind.
The hero of the book ultimately ends his game by flying a plane into the headquarters of the TV network that operates the game, gaining his revenge on the corporation, but dying in the process.

Unlike many other fantasy series, humans were not created on Darkover, but rather there was a space ship on a trip to begin a colony on another planet when the ship had troubles and crashed on an uncharted planet.
This novel serves as an introduction to Darkover (I believe it was the first novel in the series that I read years ago) as well as an important time in the history of Darkover (obviously, it is the founding).
Darkover Landfall may not be the best novel in the series, but it provided enough interest for me to want to read more in the series.

Darkover is a world ruled by the comyn, a red-haired feudal overlord caste with laran - psychic powers which can be amplified by matrix crystals.
Another noteworthy aspect of her books is complete gender equality, which is so basic an assumption underlying that society that it goes totally unremarked by everyone involved.
He deals a lot with gender and sexuality: many of his books explore some of the social implications of a future society where a sex change is a minor outpatient procedure that's done in an hour.

She created the planet of Darkover as a setting for her own series, writing a large number of Darkover stories as a solo author and later collaborating with other authors to produce Darkover anthologies, where once again she encouraged story submissions from unpublished authors.
The Darkover novels may be considered fantasy with science fiction overtones or science fiction with fantasy overtones, as Darkover was a lost earth colony where psi powers had developed to a unusual degree.
Probably her most famous single novel is The Mists of Avalon, a retelling of the Camelot legend from Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar (Guinevere's) point of view that grew into a series of books, too.

I don't know if these satisfying, very long books are still in print, but you might be able to find them in the library.
The ruling class of this semi-feudal mountain civilization are red-haired telepaths, telekinetics, clairvoyants and others with psychic powers that were concentrated into the lines during a period of expansion.
Again, I like the books before Terran re-contact better than the later books, but there is something compelling about the later part of the series too, almost separate from the first part.

Of the books listed for sale, in the paranormal romance genre, I'd recommend Susan Krinard's werewolf books and Patricia Rice's magic books (which are historical romance with a witchy twist).

 Marion Zimmer Bradley - DAW Books Authors - DAW Books
Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949.
She wrote everything from science fiction to Gothics, but is probably best known for her Darkover novels.
Over the years she turned more to fantasy; The House Between the Worlds, although a selection of the Science Fiction Book Club, was "fantasy undiluted".

Nobel House the Television Mini-series tape - starring Pierce Brosnan as the Tai Pan of the Noble House in Hong Kong The James Clavell book and sequel are in stock at amazon.com.
As readers of this column know, I shy from reviewing books in the December column because I disapprove of the buying frenzy that merchants whip up in order to enhance their profit margins at the expense of the true content of a religious holiday.
