The ELCA was formed on January 1, 1988, creating the largest Lutheran church body in the United States.
The ELCA's doctrine and requirements for entry are less conservative than those of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) or Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), the second and third largest Lutheran bodies in the United States.
The ELCA was ordered to pay the largest per capita settlement in a church sexual abuse case in the United States by a jury in Marshall, Texas on April 22, 2004.

ELCA synod assemblies for 2002 were held between April 6 and June 23.
The synod changed its previous action to read "that this assembly urges all congregations of the Delaware-Maryland Synod to welcome gay and lesbian people." The assembly instructed its secretary to inform LC/NA of the synod's action and asked that it be removed from the list of RIC synods.
It called for ELCA synod bishops to be informed and the council to be involved in any future decisions about the sale of "copyrighted properties or symbols of the ELCA." The Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Synod said the Mountain Dew advertisement conflicted with Davey and Goliath's purpose.

Lastly, the efforts of Emanuel Valdez, ELCA Southwest California Synod, to help bridge the gap between Latinos and the Lutheran church were praised for encouraging faithful, wise and courageous leaders whose vocations serve God's mission in a pluralistic world, the fifth strategic direction.
As the strategic directions of the ELCA are clarified, budget elements will need to be reevaluated by the church council in accord with ELCA guidelines.

Synod means "walking together." Christ Lutheran Church along with 164 other congregations, is part of the Northern Illinois Synod of the ELCA.
Each Synod is led by a Bishop who provides spiritual and administrative leadership for each of the synod's congregations and their pastors and rostered lay leaders.

Under growing pressure, the 2001 ELCA Churchwide Assembly responded to CCM opposition by voting that pastors could officiate at ordinations under "unusual circumstances." Such circumstances were not defined, but procedures were established that seemed to ensure such ordinations seldom would occur.
Participants in the e-mail list in all parts of the country began holding regional meetings, which they continue to schedule.
In February 2000 in Milwaukee, Wis., 18 ELCA and WordAlone leaders, evenly balanced in number of supporters and opponents of CCM, participated in an unofficial two-day dialog that was professionally mediated.

 Global Education: Women of the ELCA
The balance of the trip expenses (minimum one-third of the total cost) is borne jointly by Women of the ELCA and the ELCA Division for Global Mission.
The main responsibility of the seminar participants is to make a two-year minimum commitment to serve as global education advocates in their synod, sharing experiences gained during the seminar, and working with the synod to lift up issues affecting women in companion synod countries and churches.
ELCA synod offices, synod companion synod committee chairs, and Women of the ELCA synodical women's organizations are asked to submit names of potential seminar participants.

 News Media Information For ELCA Sexuality Study Report & Recommendations
The 2001 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Churchwide Assembly action requires that in 2005 the ELCA consider whether or not the church should bless same-gender relationships and whether or not it should allow people in committed same-gender relationships to serve the church as rostered lay and ordained ministers.
A 14-member ELCA Task Force for Studies on Sexuality is developing a report to the 2005 Churchwide Assembly and recommendations on how to answer the questions on homosexuality.
The ELCA Conference of Bishops is expected to discuss the report and recommendations when it meets on March 3-8 in Dallas.

The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), which commissioned the study, is one of the more conservative Lutheran Church bodies in America and is not normally lumped together with mainline denominations.
The Synod’s Council of Presidents reports that 15 percent of its congregational leadership positions are vacant and that unless trends change drastically, 24 percent of its congregations will not have a pastor in 2007.
