Topic: List of Elseworlds publications

Elseworlds - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elseworlds is a group of comic books produced by DC Comics that take place outside the company's canon.
The first Elseworlds title was Gotham by Gaslight, by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola and edited by Mark Waid, which featured a Victorian Age version of the superhero Batman hunting Jack the Ripper, who has come to Gotham City.
One of the most famous Elseworlds titles is Kingdom Come, a miniseries in which a new, violent generation of superheroes replaces the aging idealism of DC's classic heroes, and the conflict between the two groups ignites an apocalyptic battle.

In early 1939, the success of Superman in Action Comics prompted editors at the comic book division of National Publications (later DC Comics, D.C. is short for Detective Comics, now a subsidiary of Time Warner) to request more superheroes for their titles.
It has also been suggested by scholars that the characters of Batwoman (in 1956) and Bat-Girl (in 1961) were introduced in part to refute the allegation that Batman and Robin were gay, and the stories took on a campier, lighter feel.

The legend has it that Joseph Goebbels called Lang to his offices for a meeting in which he gave Lang two pieces of news: the first was that his most recent film, Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse (The Testament of Dr. Mabuse) was being banned as an incitement to public disorder.
The second was that he was nevertheless so impressed by Lang's abilities as a filmmaker, he was offering Lang a position as the head of German film.
Lang had an older brother named Adolf "Dolf," born March 19, 1883, whom he never acknowledged in public.

I "hestitate" to list this one as it does indeed involve an advertisement appearance and something I sway away from here, but in truth it IS an original illustration of John Lennon which appears on the inside back cover of this issue for a t-shirt ad.

Lists of such a nature are always a matter of some debate and always involve some subjectivity.
While certainly a publicity stunt (the story received tremendous coverage in the mainstream press and sales went through the roof), the story was also tremendously fun and probably deserves to be thought a classic.

Gossip of his "powers", his alleged "devilish features", and his skill in avoiding all attempts of apprehension captured the mind of the superstitious public, and so his figure was given a supernatural aura.
As a result, a whole urban legend had been built around the character, being reflected by contemporary publications, which in turn fuelled this popular perception in a vicious circle.
