While a revolution is the successful result of citizens versus the ruling authorities, a civil war generally means the leaders of the opposing sides were once part of the same ruling authority beforehand.
A civil war means a split occurred and the opposing factions maintained control over a portion of the country in order to openly wage war against each other in a conventional fashion… whereas uprisings, without benefit of land or offices to begin with, generally utilize guerrilla tactics.
