  football - HighBeam Encyclopedia
Football, amateur and professional, is perhaps the most popular spectator sport in the United States, attracting a total attendance of over 40 million and watched by many more millions on television each year.
The football field is level, measures 100 by 53 1/3 yd (91.4 by 48.8 m), is marked off by latitudinal stripes every 5 yd (4.57 m) and has at each end an end zone 10 yd (9.14 m) deep.
Although professional football was played as early as 1895 in Pennsylvania, it was not until 1920 that national organization began, with the formation of the American Professional Football Association at Canton, Ohio.

 Stadium Summary
Stadiums with a 20,000-seat capacity, which were considered to be the big prizes in the 1970s, had became second-tier venues when superstar groups were on the road.
A modern stadium (plural stadiums or stadia in English) is a place, or venue, for (mostly) outdoor sports, concerts or other events, consisting of a field or stage partly or completely surrounded by a structure designed to allow spectators to stand or sit and view the event.
The term "stadium" has also often been used for baseball parks, especially since the construction of Yankee Stadium in 1923, which had a running track initially, as a "true" stadium would, and was also used for football.

Football is too big a business, and too culturally important, for a regulatory state like the EU to stay out of its affairs.

G-14 welcomes EU involvement in issues impacting on football as a business, although they are in a sulk about the taxes they have to pay in Brussels.
