English verbs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Verbs in the English language are a lexical and morphologically distinct part of speech which describes an action, an event, or a state.
All surviving preterite-present verbs in modern English are auxiliary verbs.
English verbs, like those in many other western European languages, have more tenses than forms; tenses beyond the ones possible with the five forms listed above are formed with auxiliary verbs, as are the passive voice forms of these verbs.

List of English irregular verbs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of irregular verbs in the English language.
Typical irregularities in weak verbs are the assimilation of dentals (bended → bent) and vowel reduction (*keeped → kept).
It should be noted that many of these verbs are irregular in American or Commonwealth English only; in many cases, such as "spell" ("spelt" vs. "spelled"), American speech favors the regular form, while Commonwealth speech prefers the irregular.

English language - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about English language
The ancestral forms of English were dialects brought from the northwest coastlands of Europe to Britain by Angle, Saxon, and Jutish invaders who gained footholds in the southeast in the 5th century and over the next 200 years extended and consolidated their settlements from southern England to the middle of Scotland.
The first dialect of Old English to rise to literary prominence was Northumbrian, and during the early Old English period Northumbrian schools were the most learned in Christendom, producing such scholars as Bede and Alcuin, confidant and adviser of Charlemagne.
The orthography of English was more or less established by 1650, and, in England in particular, a form of standard educated speech (known as received pronunciation (RP)) spread from the major public (private) schools in the 19th century.

Irregular verbs are usually defined by a special look-up table.
Unlike the regular verbs, the plug-ins usually carry the table of the irregular verbs for the language along with them and check your entry against it.
Impersonal verbs (those that only exist in the infinitive and 3rd person singular) and defective verbs (where one or more tenses or persons are not used) are shown correctly as far as possible.
